Image by Red Nose Day 2009 via FlickrComic Relief is one of the biggest fund-raising days we have in the United Kingdom and the amount of money raised for people in both the United Kingdom and Africa is beyond belief. Especially this year, 2011, when people are struggling to pay their own bill and keep food in their own families mouths, we broke records and raised an exceptional £74 million by the end of the programme on BBC, Friday 18th March.
All this said though, one thing still annoys me about the whole ting, and has done for quite a few years now. Why do Sainsburys have the monopoly on the red noses. The gimmick that symbolises the whole thing.
I remember when I was younger and still at school, someone used to come round to every class selling them and the school would raise a small fortune. If you didn't get them at school, there was a certainty that you would be able to get them in almost any shop.
That's not the case anymore, and as much as Sainsburys may have helped raise for the charity, I believe it would raise an awful lot more if they didn't have the monopoly of the red noses.
If I wanted a red nose, I would have to go to my next town to find a Sainsburys, which means spending money in either petrol or bus fares. Money that I might aswell donate instead. So I just don't bother with the red nose anymore.
